“Dresscue Me,” a show on the Green Channel, follows a vintage-turned-chic boutique as its designers take older pieces and turn them into a new, modern, and inexpensive dress. The “star” of the show is Shareen Mitchell, well-known Los Angeles vintage goddess known for dressing quirky, vintage-loving celebrities. Her boutique caters exclusively towards women. “Dresscue Me” focuses on the client as much as Shareen and her shop crew: we see a woman with a story come into the store, try on vintage digs, and leave with a dress that has its own story. Shareen makes over vintage pieces from any decade or designer, giving fresh looks to the likes of vintage Oscar de la Renta or Ralph Lauren.

New Dress a Day

Blogger Marisa Lynch was in a creative funk. So she decided to spend a year revamping old dresses and turning them into fabulous new frocks. She gave herself a budget of one dollar per day to give herself a completely new wardrobe using only her wits and her trusty sewing machine. Her New Dress a Day blog features daily projects, dying tutorials and readers’ own makeover projects. Lynch soon gained a large internet following, and when the project was over, Lynch decided to spend another year making over other people’s donations. We want to look like them, dress like them and in some circumstances actually be them. For centuries society has had an obsession with celebrity in some way or another. From European royalty to Hollywood royalty, what is it about these enigmatic characters that have us so intrigued?

The obsession has become so dramatic that psychological researchers have even dubbed it “celebrity worship syndrome”. The main symptom of celebrity worship syndrome is a completely unhealthy interest (a.k.a obsession) with the lives of the rich, powerful and famous. This syndrome is way beyond the vague interest that many people have in celebrities. A person with this literally spends hours every day obsessing over one or many different famous people. A celebrity stalker would easily be classified as having celebrity worship syndrome.

The reason for this syndrome lay in the person’s level of self-esteem and feelings of fulfillment. A person lacking in these things will look for a way to escape, to seek out a more fulfilling life through fantasies and by living vicariously through others. Many people look at celebrities and envy the life they lead, full of excitement, glamour and decadence. These people achieve a certain level of satisfaction within themselves by becoming preoccupied with the lifestyle of someone in a seemingly better position. However these people fail to see that celebrities have the same problems, if not more, than any other person.

The world of celebrity seems to many to be a magical world full of cocktails, parties and extravagant homes and cars. Many in society become obsessed with this world to escape his or her dissatisfying one.
